      Zonzo at Train Trak Winery

Nestled among the vineyards half way between Yarra Glen and Healesville lies a wonderful little winery called Train Trak. The gorgeous property takes its name from the defunct Healesville railway line, which runs through the property. Some of the old railway line is still there, however nearly all of the majestic wooden bridges that kept the trains off the flood plains are gone.

An old train track disappears into the distance at Train Trak winery in the Yarra Valley.

The winding gravel road meanders through the vines and over the rail lines on its way up through rolling hills to a rustic barn. It’s here that the winemakers of Train Trak weave their magic, and it’s also here that the famous Zonzo is housed.

From the moment drive up you just know that you are in for a treat. The rustic setting instantly makes you forget the hustle of the every day. The second you walk into the restaurant you can’t help but feel like you’re in another world. The warmth from the wood-fired pizza oven, the immense space, the tungsten lights and the rusted chandelier all add to a farm-like yet modern charm that has to be experienced to be properly understood.

The outdoor dining area looks out across a sweeping vista of rolling hills and vineyards as far as you can see, with a grassed area that is just perfect for an outdoor ceremony, and you can just tell that they designed this restaurant with weddings and receptions in mind.

Another landscape shot of the winery that was the scene for our Yarra Valley wedding.

The restaurant itself backs on to a huge barn, which provides shelter for wedding parties during the colder, wetter months, and doubles as the winery’s cellar door during the week. It is also perfect for other functions such as birthdays and engagements.

The food is an Italian cafe style – lots of traditional pasta, antipasto, and the pizza is some of the best I have ever tasted. Adolfo and the team have really got the formula down pat. The service was also second to none. On the day of this review, lunch consisted of the gnocchi and the slow cooked lamb shanks. I have never had such creamy buttery gnocchi that still had structure, and the lamb literally fell off the bone the second my fork hit the plate.

We sampled the local Train Trak cabernet sauvignon, and a glass of the shiraz, and were thoroughly impressed with both the flavour and structure of the wine, but also the way it was matched to our meals.

Once they’d cleared our lunch, we got a first hand look at how they prepare a wedding reception as we wandered around and prepared ourselves for work. The level of professionalism, and the attention to detail was excellent – precisely the level worthy of even the fussiest of brides. And the feast they turned out for the wedding we photographed there was simply superb.

Again the food was relatively simple but perfectly done. Finger food, antipasto, roast lamb and vegetables cooked to perfection. The table decorations were elegant, and the glasses were polished to within an inch of their life. The staff were there when you needed them but not over-exuberant. The word I am looking for is thoroughly professional.

With the sun setting before our wedding started, we could only lament the fact that we had no subjects for what would have been some of the most breathtaking sunset photos we’d have ever taken. There are many and varied backdrops for stunning wedding photography here – whether you are outside or inside.

To put it simply Zonzo has it all. It’s classy yet rustic – a charming retreat that runs a tight ship, and serves up spectacular food and wine. With all this only a little over 60 minutes from Melbourne, it’s no wonder they have already booked 89 weddings this year. We are simply dying to do some more wedding photography there, this place is beautiful.
